New release of Channel4.com today and one of the things I'm most pleased with - Categories - are now visible.
When we started on this project we agreed that imposing a rigid taxonomy on the content as had been done before, and as some other broadcasters still do, just didn't make sense. When is a Drama a Comedy? What if I want to see all the Chat Shows or the US shows? Where do I look? What is Lifestyle when applied to TV? So instead we went for category tags.
And now we've surfaced them. Every Programme page (e.g. Ugly Betty, tagged as Drama and Comedy [note to self: ask team why not also "US"?]) tells you which Categories that programme is in and / or you can navigate by Category via the Programmes landing page. Next I think we would do well to order Programmes in a given Category by recency, rather than alphabetically.
The three "big Cs" for 2009 following the main launch of the new site before Christmas were "Categories", "Comments" and "Catch-Up". One down, two to go; both due end of March.
