In the BBC's very enjoyable programme about the impact of the Beeching report of 1963 with the unnecessarily punny title "Ian Hislop Goes Off The Rails", the eponymous presenter asks:
"How far do you go in cutting a public service in the name of efficiency before you lose the whole point of it?"
An unassuming question but in the shadow of albeit quite understandable redundancy announcements at Channel 4 the line took on a special significance for this viewer.
